Pashmina is a fine type of cashmere wool. The textiles made from it were first woven in Kashmir. The name comes from Persian: پشمینه / pašmina, meaning “made from wool”. Pashmina came to be known as ‘cashmere’ in the West because Europeans first encountered this fibre in Kashmir.

Pashmina, a luxurious variant of cashmere wool, originated in Kashmir, where textiles crafted from this exquisite material were first woven. The term “Pashmina” finds its roots in the Persian language, specifically پشمینه (pašmina), signifying “made from wool.” In Western regions, it acquired the name ‘cashmere’ due to Europeans encountering this remarkable fiber in Kashmir.
The wool used for Pashmina comes from diverse breeds of the cashmere goat, including the changthangi or pashmina goat from the Changthang Plateau in Ladakh, the malra from the Kargil area in Ladakh, the chegu from Himachal Pradesh in the Himalayas of northern India, and the chyangara or Nepalese pashmina goat from Nepal. Shawls known as shahmina, crafted through hand spinning and weaving of the exceptionally fine cashmere fabric, are prevalent in Kashmir and Nepal.
